Javier Viver: «Lo propio de la Iglesia es transformar la cultura y renovarla»
Es martes por la mañana, llegamos al taller de Javier Viver. Al cruzar la puerta se respira un ambiente tranquilo. Algunos jóvenes comparten espacio de trabajo con él, una de las artistas retoca una de las figuras de la Madre de la Esperanza. En el patio, otro chico prepara un molde que dará forma a otra futura figura. Mientras tanto, otras tres personas organizan otros proyectos como El Observatorio de lo invisible, la escuela de verano impulsada por el artista madrileño.

Within the activities programmed for the exhibition Museum of Passions, which can be visited until September 20th at the Lazaro Galdiano Museum, the artist Javier Viver will present the catalog of the exhibition and his photobook Cristos y Anticristos, on Thursday 17th at 7pm. The presentation will take place in the Auditorium, following health and hygiene measures, with a capacity limit of 40 people. The artist and editor will be there one hour before the presentation of the books to attend the media.
Dentro de las actividades programadas con motivo de la exposición Museo de Pasiones, la cual podrá visitarse hasta el 20 de septiembre en el Museo Lázaro Galdiano, el artista Javier Viver presentará el catálogo de la misma y su fotolibro Cristos y Anticristos, el jueves 17 a las 19h. La presentación tendrá lugar en el Auditorio, siguiendo las medidas higiénico sanitarias, con una limitación de aforo de 40 personas. El artista y editor estará una hora antes de la presentación de los libros para atender a los medios.

«Cum grano salis» is the title of a season of immersive music that is part of the exhibition project » Museum of Passions» by visual artist Javier Viver. Although this exhibition has its main venue in the Lázaro Galdiano Museum in Madrid (where it can be visited from the 5th of February to the 4th of May), it is in the second venue of the project, the Architects’ Chapel, where this cycle of concerts will be held (which will take place between the 13th of February and the 4th of May). Under the dome designed by the architect Ventura Rodríguez, whose remains rest in the crypt of this chapel in the historic Church of San Sebastián – located at number 39, Calle de Atocha – the musicians Fernando Monedero – together with the Taizé choir – will perform («Nacimiento», 13 February), Menhir («La meditación del agua», March 7th), Luis Hernáiz («Levitación», March 21st), Lucas Bolaño («Latido», April 4th), Alberto Bernal («Disolución», April 18th), and again Fernando Monedero (May 2nd), this time without the physical presence of the choir, but with their voices previously recorded. The worship space, without abandoning its dimension as a space for reflection, thus also becomes an exhibition space and a space for the search for the unspeakable.

Si bien esta muestra tiene su sede principal en el Museo Lázaro Galdiano de Madrid (donde se puede visitar desde el 5 de febrero al 4 de mayo), es en la segunda sede del proyecto, la Capilla de los Arquitectos, donde se celebrará este ciclo de conciertos (que se desarrolla entre el 13 de febrero y el 4 de mayo). The artist from Madrid, Javier Viver, proposes a reinterpretation of the Museo Lázaro Galdiano through the greatest human passions that can be seen from 5 February to 3 May at the museum. A gallery developed by relating photographs of the Parisian psychiatric hospital of the Salpêtrière with the works of the Lazarus Collection.
The main piece in this exhibition is Lot’s Wife, a six-metre high sculpture of stone salt inspired by the biblical character of Edit, which has been turned into a salt statue by looking back.

The Lázaro Galdiano Museum has been collaborating with contemporary artists for a long time. Through the intervention of current creators it manages to bring its collection, which focuses on pieces from before the 20th century, into contact with the present. These interventions often take place in a room of modest dimensions on the first floor of the building. On this occasion, Javier Viver has extended his influence to practically the entire museum.

Last Saturday 25th of May we celebrated the 10th anniversary of the studio of the artist Javier Viver.
The doors of the artist’s studio were open from 12:00 in the morning until 21:00 in the evening. The artists invited to open the doors were the photographers Lupe de la Vallina and Roberto Villalón Vara.
The 10th anniversary was framed by the public presentation of the artist’s new exhibition project at the Lázaro Galdiano Museum and the Chapel of the Architects of Ventura Rodriguez in the Church of San Sebastian in Calle Atocha. Both for February 2020.El pasado sábado 25 de Mayo celebramos el X aniversario del estudio del artista Javier Viver.
Las puertas del estudio del artista estuvieron abiertas desde las 12:00 h de la mañana hasta las 21:00 h de la tarde noche. Los artistas invitados a estjornada de puertas abiertas fueron los fotógrafos Lupe de la Vallina y Roberto Villalón Vara.
El X aniversario quedó enmarcado bajo la presentación pública del nuevo proyecto expositivo del artista en el Museo Lázaro Galdiano y en la Capilla de los arquitectos de Ventura Rodriguez de la iglesia de San Sebastian en la calle Atocha. Ambos para febrero del 2020.

Several pieces of Aurelia Immortal’s project of Javier Viver travel from the University of Navarra Museum to San Telmo Museum in San Sebastian
It’s not easy to talk about death. But we do want to know how we have represented it and what rituals we have surrounded it with. We want to understand why we sometimes approach it with anguish and fear, but at other times we approach it via festivities and fantasies. We want to know how different religious traditions have proposed transcending death and also how science fights against it and even tries to defeat it. We want to promote reflection and to understand the meaning of the different approaches to enrich our own viewpoint. That’s why it’s not easy to talk about death.

Exposición colectiva
Javier Viver participa con varias piezas de su proyecto Aurelia Immortal en la nueva exposición colectiva que reúne obras prestadas de diferentes colecciones e instituciones, como es en este caso, la del Museo Universidad de Navarra
No es fácil hablar de la muerte, pero es eso precisamente lo que el museo propone con esta exposición: romper el tabu sobre la muerte y reflexionar. La muestra invita a las actitudes con las que el ser humano ha enfrentado y enfrenta el fenómeno de la muerte.
Para abordar este tema la muestra recoge objetos vinculados a los ritos, creencias y costumbres procedentes de diferentes culturas, así como fotos, fotos; documentos, audiovisuales; cuadros; cómics, etc.

Javier Viver exhibits his project Aurelia Immortal at Javier Silva until 17 December
The path from the laboratory to the artist’s workshop and back has been travelled countless times throughout history. The name of Leonardo da Vinci may soon come to mind when it comes to the relationship between science and art, but both aspects of human creativity have been successfully brought together in virtually every age of mankind. Now he does so in the work of Javier Viver (Madrid, 1971), which is being exhibited for the first time at the Javier Silva Gallery. Viver is a sculptor, photographer, designer and editor of photobooks. His doctoral work was an investigation at the PLAT (Picto-Lumínica-Audio-Táctil) laboratory on the work of filmmaker José Val del Omar, entitled ‘Laboratorio Val del Omar’, which, in addition to being published by Cameo in the form of a documentary, earned him a commission from the Reina Sofía Museum to install the PLAT laboratory in its rooms with Javier Ortiz Echagüe, during the ‘Desbordamiento Val del Omar’ exhibition.

El camino del laboratorio al taller del artista y vuelta ha sido recorrido en innumerables ocasiones a lo largo de la historia. Quizá el nombre de Leonardo da Vinci en seguida se nos venga a la memoria tratándose de las relaciones¡ entre ciencia y arte, pero ambos aspectos de la creatividad humana se han dado la mano con acierto en prácticamente todas las épocas de la humanidad. Ahora lo hace en el trabajo de Javier Viver (Madrid, 1971) que por primera vez expone en la galería Javier Silva. Viver es escultor, fotógrafo, diseñador y editor de fotolibros. Su trabajo de doctorado fue una investigación en el laboratorio PLAT (siglas de Picto-Lumínica-Audio-Táctil) sobre la obra del cineasta José Val del Omar, titulada ‘Laboratorio Val del Omar’ que, además de ser publicada por Cameo en forma de documental, le valió un encargo del Museo Reina Sofía para instalar en sus salas junto a Javier Ortiz Echagüe el laboratorio PLAT, durante la exposición ‘Desbordamiento Val del Omar’.

Hay en la locura algo perturbador y doliente. Hay locura en el Arte, y también hay locura en la Ciencia. Pero la forma de aproximarse a ésta es muy diferente en función de con qué ojo se mire. Si la Ciencia trata de encerrar, rehabilitar y erradicar la locura en el hombre, considerándola una enfermedad; el Arte la observa, despojada de prejuicios, y hurga en su inherencia para revelar lo bello de su condición. También hay belleza en la locura.

The sculptor, photographer and designer Javier Viver opened the doors of the San Sebastian Aquarium yesterday to present his exhibition ‘Aurelia Inmortal’, which portrays the amazing life cycle of the Aurelia aurita jellyfish, the only being capable of defeating death. The project is made up of 27 photographs of the «transhuman» species, four sculptures, three drawings and a photo-book, produced by Viver, in which he tells the fictitious story of the immortal society, set in 2046″.

El escultor, fotógrafo y diseñador Javier Viver abrió ayer las puertas del Aquarium de San Sebastián para presentar su exposición ‘Aurelia Inmortal’, donde se retrata el sorprendente ciclo vital de la medusa Aurelia aurita, el único ser capaz de vencer a la muerte. El proyecto se compone de 27 fotografías de la especie «transhumana», cuatro esculturas, tres dibujos y un fotolibro, elaborado por Viver, en el que relata la historia ficticia de la sociedad inmortal, ambientada en 2046.»

The ENAIRE Foundation’s awards are on display at the Cervantes until August 26, presenting at the headquarters of the Instituto Cervantes Evolucionarios, an exhibition consisting of 31 photographs of the winning artists of the three awards that the Foundation has granted in 2018.

The ENAIRE Foundation is showing the exhibition ‘Evolutionaries’, which was awarded the Photography Prize by the foundation itself, at the Cervantes Institute in Madrid from June 15 to August 26, as part of PHotoEspaña.
In line with this commitment to photographic work, in 2018 Fundación ENAIRE wanted to take another step forward by creating two new awards in this artistic category: the Trajectory Award, in recognition of an entire career devoted to photography, which in its first edition was awarded to Javier Vallhonrat, and the Residence Award, which contributes to the promotion of new creators in their formative years, in this case, Gema Rupérez, Javier Viver and Ana Linhares.

«It is worth seeing the exhibition display that Cámara Oscura makes of Javier Viver’s work, developing the proposal of his photobook Révélations. Iconographie de la Salpêtrière. Paris 1875-1918, prize for the best art book of 2015, which revisits the photographic archive of this psychiatric hospital»
In its twenty years of existence, the PHotoEspaña festival, which in its day took over from the Primavera Fotogràfica de Barcelona (according to the model established in the nineteen-seventies by the Arles Meetings), has served to give this medium a charter in the Spanish cultural sphere. Today it is no longer possible to make a segment apart from a technique that in fact floods everything and is the key to the constitution of the public and private imaginary. Now that its main mission has been fulfilled, PHotoEspaña’s role has shrunk. The festival is now limited to being the brand that covers the exhibition season during the difficult summer months. And it does not cease to make sense to opt for photography for this purpose, since to its popularity, which can be translated into visits, we can add the relative ease and low cost of exhibiting it compared to other media.

«Merece la pena ver el despliegue expositivo que Cámara Oscura hace de la obra de Javier Viver, desarrollando la propuesta de su fotolibro Révélations. Iconographie de la Salpêtrière. Paris 1875-1918, premio al mejor libro de arte de 2015, que revisita el archivo fotográfico de este psiquiátrico»
En sus veinte años de recorrido, el festival PHotoEspaña, que en su día tomó el relevo de la Primavera Fotográfica de Barcelona (según el modelo establecido en los setenta por los Encuentros de Arlés), ha servido para dar carta de naturaleza a este medio en el ámbito cultural español. Hoy ya no es posible hacer segmento aparte de una técnica que de hecho lo inunda todo y que es la clave de la constitución del imaginario público y privado. Cumplida su principal misión, la función de PHotoEspaña se ha ido encogiendo. El festival se limita hoy a ser la marca que cubre la temporada expositiva de los difíciles meses veraniegos. Y no deja de tener sentido optar por la fotografía para este fin, pues a su popularidad, traducible en visitas, suma la relativa facilidad y bajo coste de exponerla en comparación con otros medios.

Under the title of “The Archive of the Unclassifiable” the author shows a selection of photographs from the “Iconographie de La Salpêtrière” filed in a modular filing cabinet, and the reconstruction of a number of body castings. Likewise, he takes over the methods employed at the psychiatric hospital of La Salpêtrière in Paris in order to document their case reports. Thus Viver takes his proposal of the “Révélations” book to the exhibition space of the gallery. His book was published by the RM publishing company and sold out a few months after being released, having been awarded the National Prize for the Best Art Book by the Spanish Ministry of Culture in 2016, and also the ArtsLibris Award.
Some of the last available copies of the book will be on sale at the exhibition venue.

“Archivo de lo Inclasificable” es el título de la muestra con la que el autor expone una selección de fotografías de la “Iconografía de La Salpêtrière” archivadas en un mueble planero y la reconstrucción de algunos vaciados del natural. De esta forma sigue los usos empleados en el hospital psiquiátrico de La Salpêtrière de París para documentar los casos clínicos. Viver lleva al formato expositivo la propuesta que desarrolló en su libro “Révélations”, editado por la editorial RM y agotado a los pocos meses del lanzamiento, libro que fue Premio Nacional del Ministerio de Educación, Cultura y Deportes al mejor libro de arte del año 2016 y Premio ArtsLibris.
Con ocasión de la muestra el autor pondrá a la venta los ejemplares que aún conserva de “Révélations”.

The Best Photography Book of the Year in PHotoESPAÑA 2018 has already chosen 57 publications. The selection will be exhibited at the Biblioteca Nacional de España from 6 June to 23 September 2018. The exhibition will also include the 20 maquettes that are the finalists for the Book Dummy Award 2017, organised by La Fábrica and Photo London, and 10 of the latest editions by La Fábrica Publisher, which will not contend for the Award.

Dentro del Otoño Fotográfico, la galería Marisa Marimón presenta el proyecto ‘Aurelia Inmortal’ de Javier Viver, basado en un descubrimiento científico que le sirve para plantear una narración que oscila entre la documentación científica y la ficción. En diciembre de 2015, el estudiante chino de biología marina He Jinru publicó en la revista ‘Plos One’ la sorprendente propiedad de la medusa Aurelia, capaz de alcanzar la inmortalidad biológica. Según se hacía eco el National Geographic, una vez que Aurelia inmortal expira, desarrolla la capacidad prodigiosa de regenerar sus células hasta alcanzar la etapa juvenil, como si de un Ave Fénix se tratara.

The artist Javier Viver has taken his work «Revelations» to the Munoa Palace in Barakaldo: a photo book in which he reinterprets the photo archive of the La Salpetriere psychiatric hospital in Paris, photos taken at the end of the 19th century. Viver has installed the photographs on the walls of the palace and around the garden that surrounds this enigmatic enclave… The exhibition is part of the «Baffest» festival organized by the Barakaldo City Council.
Begoña Zubieta has been there and this is the report broadcast on ETB’s Teleberri.El artista Javier Viver ha llevado hasta el palacio Munoa de Barakaldo su trabajo «Revelations»: un fotolibro en donde reintrepreta el archivo de fotos del hospital psiquiátrico La Salpetriere de París, fotos tomadas a finales del siglo XIX. Viver ha instalado las fotografias en las paredes del palacio y en el entorno del jardín que rodea este enigmático enclave… La exposición se enmarca dentro del festival «Baffest» organizado por el Ayuntamiento de Barakaldo.

The «Iconographie de La Salpêtrière» is one of the first photographic archives in the field of clinical psychiatry.
Directed by Jean-Martin Charcot and sponsored by the French state, it involved an effort to catalogue the unclassifiable by means of new photographic-documentary techniques. The marginal, that which did not fit into the rational logic of the modern project, was dissected in La Salpêtrière. It was measured, documented and classified in a systematic way. But in this operation, the use of photography led to the incorporation of the spectacle and with it a whole web of complicities between the patients and their photographers. La Salpêtrière’s show became a theatre of variety in the Tuesday sessions, before a crowded representation of the cultural and scientific elites, by means of the induction by hypnosis of contortions, epileptic seizures and hysteria attacks, the recording and exhibition of cabinets of biological curiosities and rarities, phenomena and monsters.FOTO COLECTANIA

La «Iconographie de La Salpêtrière» es uno de los primeros archivos fotográficos en el campo de la psiquiatría clínica.
Dirigido por Jean-Martin Charcot y patrocinado por el estado francés, supuso un esfuerzo de catalogación de lo inclasificable mediante las nuevas técnicas fotográfico-documentales. Lo marginal, aquello que no entraba en la lógica racional del proyecto moderno, sometió a disección en La Salpêtrière. Se midió, se documentó y clasificó de forma sistemática. Pero en esta operación, el uso de la fotografía propició la incorporación del espectáculo y con él toda una trama de complicidades entre los pacientes y sus fotógrafos. El espectáculo de La Salpêtrière se hizo teatro de variedades en las sesiones de los martes, ante una concurrida representación de las élites culturales y científicas, mediante la inducción por hipnosis de contorsiones, crisis epilépticas y ataques de histeria, el registro y exposición de gabinetes de curiosidades y rarezas biológicas, fenómenos y monstruos.

Javier Viver’s ‘RÉVÉLATIONS’, the recent launch of the Mexican publishing house RM, has just received the prize for the Best Art Book published in 2015 by the Spanish Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport.
The book is a particular compilation, edition and reading of the photographic archive of the Parisian hospital Salpêtrière. The work has sought new associations and interpretation plans of an iconographic archive that goes beyond the simple exhibition of clinical cases.

«From my point of view, the work must breathe open to the multiple resonances it may arouse. The explanations are later. Perhaps we are in a special moment of maturation of the photobook as an artistic medium. This implies that the reader should learn to read the images in a sequence. Understanding that the appearance of the text must be essential and not accidental».
To speak of La Salpêtrière, the famous hospital in the 13th arrondissement in Paris, where Charcot, the father of modern neurology, developed a large part of his work (and where Esquirol, Freud and Vulpian, among others, passed through), is to speak of a classic. For that reason, and because his most recent publication: a fabulous catalogue with images of the hospital’s patients has just been published by RM publishing house, we meet the Spanish artist and researcher Javier Viver (Madrid 1971), who, in addition to this book, has already completed a couple of exhibitions with the faces, looks and gestures that the hospital’s doctors and photographers have been archiving for years.

«Desde mi punto de vista la obra debe respirar abierta a las múltiples resonancias que pueda suscitar. Las explicaciones son posteriores. Quizá nos encontremos en un momento especial de maduración del fotolibro como medio artístico. Esto implica por parte del lector aprender a leer las imágenes en una secuencia. Entender que la aparición del texto debe ser esencial y no accidental”.
Hablar de La Salpêtrière, el célebre hospital del distrito XIII, en París, donde Charcot, padre de la neurología moderna, desarrolló gran parte de su trabajo (y por donde pasaron entre otros Esquirol, Freud y Vulpian), es hablar de un clásico. Por esa razón, y porque su publicación más reciente: un fabuloso catálogo con imágenes de los enfermos del hospital acaba de ser editado por la editorial RM, nos encontramos con el artista e investigador español Javier Viver (Madrid 1971), quien, además de este libro, ha ultimado ya un par de exposiciones con los rostros, miradas y gestos que durante años los médicos y fotógrafos del hospital fueron archivando.

The Auto Sacramental: The Message of Granada is an idea-project-work just sketched in some audios and that exceeds the vision to generate, through 12 channels a story full of ungraspable nooks and crannies and phonemes thrown to the ground to bounce aimlessly. If «the sound is similar to ashes, you see it, it has a shape, but when you try to grab it it melts, it vanishes, it flies», the Auto Sacramental: El Mensaje de Granada de Val del Omar is a very big handful of ashes that in this capsule we have tried, without much success, to rearrange and, above all, to divulge.El Auto Sacramental: El Mensaje de Granada es una idea-proyecto-obra apenas bocetada en algunos audios y que supera la visión para generar, a través de 12 canales un relato lleno de recovecos inasibles y de fonemas lanzados contra el suelo para que reboten sin rumbo. Si “el sonido es similar a las cenizas, lo ves, tiene forma, pero cuando intentas agarrarlo se deshace, se esfuma, vuela”, el Auto Sacramental: El Mensaje de Granada de Val del Omar es un puñado muy grande de cenizas que en esta cápsula hemos intentado, sin mucho éxito, reordenar y, sobre todo, divulgar.

The Lázaro Galdiano Museum has been collaborating with contemporary artists for a long time. Through the intervention of current creators it manages to bring its collection, which focuses on pieces from before the 20th century, into contact with the present. These interventions often take place in a room of modest dimensions on the first floor of the building. On this occasion, Javier Viver has extended his influence to practically the entire museum.

The path from the laboratory to the artist’s workshop and back has been travelled countless times throughout history. The name of Leonardo da Vinci may soon come to mind when it comes to the relationship between science and art, but both aspects of human creativity have been successfully brought together in virtually every age of mankind. Now he does so in the work of Javier Viver (Madrid, 1971), which is being exhibited for the first time at the Javier Silva Gallery. Viver is a sculptor, photographer, designer and editor of photobooks. His doctoral work was an investigation at the PLAT (Picto-Lumínica-Audio-Táctil) laboratory on the work of filmmaker José Val del Omar, entitled ‘Laboratorio Val del Omar’, which, in addition to being published by Cameo in the form of a documentary, earned him a commission from the Reina Sofía Museum to install the PLAT laboratory in its rooms with Javier Ortiz Echagüe, during the ‘Desbordamiento Val del Omar’ exhibition.

El camino del laboratorio al taller del artista y vuelta ha sido recorrido en innumerables ocasiones a lo largo de la historia. Quizá el nombre de Leonardo da Vinci en seguida se nos venga a la memoria tratándose de las relaciones¡ entre ciencia y arte, pero ambos aspectos de la creatividad humana se han dado la mano con acierto en prácticamente todas las épocas de la humanidad. Ahora lo hace en el trabajo de Javier Viver (Madrid, 1971) que por primera vez expone en la galería Javier Silva. Viver es escultor, fotógrafo, diseñador y editor de fotolibros. Su trabajo de doctorado fue una investigación en el laboratorio PLAT (siglas de Picto-Lumínica-Audio-Táctil) sobre la obra del cineasta José Val del Omar, titulada ‘Laboratorio Val del Omar’ que, además de ser publicada por Cameo en forma de documental, le valió un encargo del Museo Reina Sofía para instalar en sus salas junto a Javier Ortiz Echagüe el laboratorio PLAT, durante la exposición ‘Desbordamiento Val del Omar’.

«It is worth seeing the exhibition display that Cámara Oscura makes of Javier Viver’s work, developing the proposal of his photobook Révélations. Iconographie de la Salpêtrière. Paris 1875-1918, prize for the best art book of 2015, which revisits the photographic archive of this psychiatric hospital»
In its twenty years of existence, the PHotoEspaña festival, which in its day took over from the Primavera Fotogràfica de Barcelona (according to the model established in the nineteen-seventies by the Arles Meetings), has served to give this medium a charter in the Spanish cultural sphere. Today it is no longer possible to make a segment apart from a technique that in fact floods everything and is the key to the constitution of the public and private imaginary. Now that its main mission has been fulfilled, PHotoEspaña’s role has shrunk. The festival is now limited to being the brand that covers the exhibition season during the difficult summer months. And it does not cease to make sense to opt for photography for this purpose, since to its popularity, which can be translated into visits, we can add the relative ease and low cost of exhibiting it compared to other media.

En sus veinte años de recorrido, el festival PHotoEspaña, que en su día tomó el relevo de la Primavera Fotográfica de Barcelona (según el modelo establecido en los setenta por los Encuentros de Arlés), ha servido para dar carta de naturaleza a este medio en el ámbito cultural español. Hoy ya no es posible hacer segmento aparte de una técnica que de hecho lo inunda todo y que es la clave de la constitución del imaginario público y privado. Cumplida su principal misión, la función de PHotoEspaña se ha ido encogiendo. El festival se limita hoy a ser la marca que cubre la temporada expositiva de los difíciles meses veraniegos. Y no deja de tener sentido optar por la fotografía para este fin, pues a su popularidad, traducible en visitas, suma la relativa facilidad y bajo coste de exponerla en comparación con otros medios.

To speak of La Salpêtrière, the famous hospital in the 13th arrondissement in Paris, where Charcot, the father of modern neurology, developed a large part of his work (and where Esquirol, Freud and Vulpian, among others, passed through), is to speak of a classic. For that reason, and because his most recent publication: a fabulous catalogue with images of the hospital’s patients has just been published by RM publishing house, we meet the Spanish artist and researcher Javier Viver (Madrid 1971), who, in addition to this book, has already completed a couple of exhibitions with the faces, looks and gestures that the hospital’s doctors and photographers have been archiving for years.

Interview with the artist from Madrid who, in his latest work, takes as his starting point the Iconography of La Salpêtrière, one of the first photographic archives in the field of clinical psychiatry.
Based on clinical analyses of psychological illnesses in a Paris hospital, directed by Jean-Martin Charcot, it involved an effort to catalogue the unclassifiable by means of new photographic-documentary techniques. The marginal, that which did not fit into the rational logic of the modern project, was subjected to research at La Salpêtrière. It was measured, documented and classified in a systematic way.

The Auto Sacramental: The Message of Granada is an idea-project-work just sketched in some audios and that exceeds the vision to generate, through 12 channels a story full of ungraspable nooks and crannies and phonemes thrown to the ground to bounce aimlessly. If «the sound is similar to ashes, you see it, it has a shape, but when you try to grab it it melts, it vanishes, it flies», the Auto Sacramental: El Mensaje de Granada de Val del Omar is a very big handful of ashes that in this capsule we have tried, without much success, to rearrange and, above all, to divulge.El Auto Sacramental: El Mensaje de Granada es una idea-proyecto-obra apenas bocetada en algunos audios y que supera la visión para generar, a través de 12 canales un relato lleno de recovecos inasibles y de fonemas lanzados contra el suelo para que reboten sin rumbo. Si “el sonido es similar a las cenizas, lo ves, tiene forma, pero cuando intentas agarrarlo se deshace, se esfuma, vuela”, el Auto Sacramental: El Mensaje de Granada de Val del Omar es un puñado muy grande de cenizas que en esta cápsula hemos intentado, sin mucho éxito, reordenar y, sobre todo, divulgar.

Within the activities programmed for the exhibition Museum of Passions, which can be visited until September 20th at the Lazaro Galdiano Museum, the artist Javier Viver will present the catalog of the exhibition and his photobook Cristos y Anticristos, on Thursday 17th at 7pm. The presentation will take place in the Auditorium, following health and hygiene measures, with a capacity limit of 40 people. The artist and editor will be there one hour before the presentation of the books to attend the media.
Dentro de las actividades programadas con motivo de la exposición Museo de Pasiones, la cual podrá visitarse hasta el 20 de septiembre en el Museo Lázaro Galdiano, el artista Javier Viver presentará el catálogo de la misma y su fotolibro Cristos y Anticristos, el jueves 17 a las 19h. La presentación tendrá lugar en el Auditorio, siguiendo las medidas higiénico sanitarias, con una limitación de aforo de 40 personas. El artista y editor estará una hora antes de la presentación de los libros para atender a los medios.

By the artist Javier Viver from Madrid, in the Lázaro Galdiano Museum (5 February – 4 May) and in the Architects’ Chapel of the Church of San Sebastian (13 February – 4 May) is the result of the confluence – on the one hand – of the exhibition programme of the Lázaro Galdiano Museum, which invites contemporary artists to dialogue with the masterpieces of the Lázaro Collection, and – for another – of the activity of the Royal Congregation of Architects which proposes a fruitful meeting between the Church and contemporary culture.

Last Saturday 25th of May we celebrated the 10th anniversary of the studio of the artist Javier Viver.
The doors of the artist’s studio were open from 12:00 in the morning until 21:00 in the evening. The artists invited to open the doors were the photographers Lupe de la Vallina and Roberto Villalón Vara.
The 10th anniversary was framed by the public presentation of the artist’s new exhibition project at the Lázaro Galdiano Museum and the Chapel of the Architects of Ventura Rodriguez in the Church of San Sebastian in Calle Atocha. Both for February 2020.El pasado sábado 25 de Mayo celebramos el X aniversario del estudio del artista Javier Viver.
Las puertas del estudio del artista estuvieron abiertas desde las 12:00 h de la mañana hasta las 21:00 h de la tarde noche. Los artistas invitados a estjornada de puertas abiertas fueron los fotógrafos Lupe de la Vallina y Roberto Villalón Vara.
El X aniversario quedó enmarcado bajo la presentación pública del nuevo proyecto expositivo del artista en el Museo Lázaro Galdiano y en la Capilla de los arquitectos de Ventura Rodriguez de la iglesia de San Sebastian en la calle Atocha. Ambos para febrero del 2020.

It’s not easy to talk about death. But we do want to know how we have represented it and what rituals we have surrounded it with. We want to understand why we sometimes approach it with anguish and fear, but at other times we approach it via festivities and fantasies. We want to know how different religious traditions have proposed transcending death and also how science fights against it and even tries to defeat it. We want to promote reflection and to understand the meaning of the different approaches to enrich our own viewpoint. That’s why it’s not easy to talk about death.

Javier Viver participa con varias piezas de su proyecto Aurelia Immortal en la nueva exposición colectiva que reúne obras prestadas de diferentes colecciones e instituciones, como es en este caso, la del Museo Universidad de Navarra
No es fácil hablar de la muerte, pero es eso precisamente lo que el museo propone con esta exposición: romper el tabu sobre la muerte y reflexionar. La muestra invita a las actitudes con las que el ser humano ha enfrentado y enfrenta el fenómeno de la muerte.
Para abordar este tema la muestra recoge objetos vinculados a los ritos, creencias y costumbres procedentes de diferentes culturas, así como fotos, fotos; documentos, audiovisuales; cuadros; cómics, etc.

«It is worth seeing the exhibition display that Cámara Oscura makes of Javier Viver’s work, developing the proposal of his photobook Révélations. Iconographie de la Salpêtrière. Paris 1875-1918, prize for the best art book of 2015, which revisits the photographic archive of this psychiatric hospital»
In its twenty years of existence, the PHotoEspaña festival, which in its day took over from the Primavera Fotogràfica de Barcelona (according to the model established in the nineteen-seventies by the Arles Meetings), has served to give this medium a charter in the Spanish cultural sphere. Today it is no longer possible to make a segment apart from a technique that in fact floods everything and is the key to the constitution of the public and private imaginary. Now that its main mission has been fulfilled, PHotoEspaña’s role has shrunk. The festival is now limited to being the brand that covers the exhibition season during the difficult summer months. And it does not cease to make sense to opt for photography for this purpose, since to its popularity, which can be translated into visits, we can add the relative ease and low cost of exhibiting it compared to other media.

En sus veinte años de recorrido, el festival PHotoEspaña, que en su día tomó el relevo de la Primavera Fotográfica de Barcelona (según el modelo establecido en los setenta por los Encuentros de Arlés), ha servido para dar carta de naturaleza a este medio en el ámbito cultural español. Hoy ya no es posible hacer segmento aparte de una técnica que de hecho lo inunda todo y que es la clave de la constitución del imaginario público y privado. Cumplida su principal misión, la función de PHotoEspaña se ha ido encogiendo. El festival se limita hoy a ser la marca que cubre la temporada expositiva de los difíciles meses veraniegos. Y no deja de tener sentido optar por la fotografía para este fin, pues a su popularidad, traducible en visitas, suma la relativa facilidad y bajo coste de exponerla en comparación con otros medios.

Under the title of “The Archive of the Unclassifiable” the author shows a selection of photographs from the “Iconographie de La Salpêtrière” filed in a modular filing cabinet, and the reconstruction of a number of body castings. Likewise, he takes over the methods employed at the psychiatric hospital of La Salpêtrière in Paris in order to document their case reports. Thus Viver takes his proposal of the “Révélations” book to the exhibition space of the gallery. His book was published by the RM publishing company and sold out a few months after being released, having been awarded the National Prize for the Best Art Book by the Spanish Ministry of Culture in 2016, and also the ArtsLibris Award.
Some of the last available copies of the book will be on sale at the exhibition venue.

“Archivo de lo Inclasificable” es el título de la muestra con la que el autor expone una selección de fotografías de la “Iconografía de La Salpêtrière” archivadas en un mueble planero y la reconstrucción de algunos vaciados del natural. De esta forma sigue los usos empleados en el hospital psiquiátrico de La Salpêtrière de París para documentar los casos clínicos. Viver lleva al formato expositivo la propuesta que desarrolló en su libro “Révélations”, editado por la editorial RM y agotado a los pocos meses del lanzamiento, libro que fue Premio Nacional del Ministerio de Educación, Cultura y Deportes al mejor libro de arte del año 2016 y Premio ArtsLibris.
Con ocasión de la muestra el autor pondrá a la venta los ejemplares que aún conserva de “Révélations”.

The exhibition will also include the 20 maquettes that are the finalists for the Book Dummy Award 2017, organised by La Fábrica and Photo London, and 10 of the latest editions by La Fábrica Publisher, which will not contend for the Award.

Dentro del Otoño Fotográfico, la galería Marisa Marimón presenta el proyecto ‘Aurelia Inmortal’ de Javier Viver, basado en un descubrimiento científico que le sirve para plantear una narración que oscila entre la documentación científica y la ficción. En diciembre de 2015, el estudiante chino de biología marina He Jinru publicó en la revista ‘Plos One’ la sorprendente propiedad de la medusa Aurelia, capaz de alcanzar la inmortalidad biológica. Según se hacía eco el National Geographic, una vez que Aurelia inmortal expira, desarrolla la capacidad prodigiosa de regenerar sus células hasta alcanzar la etapa juvenil, como si de un Ave Fénix se tratara.

El documental traza un recorrido a través de la producción valdelomariana, desde su labor como documentalista en las Misiones Pedagógicas hasta sus experiencias en el campo del cine-poesía o el cine expandido y procesual. En ella se ofrecen fuentes inéditas sobre los insólitos procesos de creación desarrollados por Val del Omar, el origen místico de su producción cinematográfica.

Javier Viver dialogues with the pieces from the Lázaro Galdiano Museum in his latest exhibition: Museum of Passions.
The Lázaro Galdiano Museum has been collaborating with contemporary artists for a long time. Through the intervention of current creators it manages to bring its collection, which focuses on pieces from before the 20th century, into contact with the present. These interventions often take place in a room of modest dimensions on the first floor of the building. On this occasion, Javier Viver has extended his influence to practically the entire museum.

Javier Viver exhibits his project Aurelia Immortal at Javier Silva until 17 December
The path from the laboratory to the artist’s workshop and back has been travelled countless times throughout history. The name of Leonardo da Vinci may soon come to mind when it comes to the relationship between science and art, but both aspects of human creativity have been successfully brought together in virtually every age of mankind. Now he does so in the work of Javier Viver (Madrid, 1971), which is being exhibited for the first time at the Javier Silva Gallery. Viver is a sculptor, photographer, designer and editor of photobooks. His doctoral work was an investigation at the PLAT (Picto-Lumínica-Audio-Táctil) laboratory on the work of filmmaker José Val del Omar, entitled ‘Laboratorio Val del Omar’, which, in addition to being published by Cameo in the form of a documentary, earned him a commission from the Reina Sofía Museum to install the PLAT laboratory in its rooms with Javier Ortiz Echagüe, during the ‘Desbordamiento Val del Omar’ exhibition.

El camino del laboratorio al taller del artista y vuelta ha sido recorrido en innumerables ocasiones a lo largo de la historia. Quizá el nombre de Leonardo da Vinci en seguida se nos venga a la memoria tratándose de las relaciones¡ entre ciencia y arte, pero ambos aspectos de la creatividad humana se han dado la mano con acierto en prácticamente todas las épocas de la humanidad. Ahora lo hace en el trabajo de Javier Viver (Madrid, 1971) que por primera vez expone en la galería Javier Silva. Viver es escultor, fotógrafo, diseñador y editor de fotolibros. Su trabajo de doctorado fue una investigación en el laboratorio PLAT (siglas de Picto-Lumínica-Audio-Táctil) sobre la obra del cineasta José Val del Omar, titulada ‘Laboratorio Val del Omar’ que, además de ser publicada por Cameo en forma de documental, le valió un encargo del Museo Reina Sofía para instalar en sus salas junto a Javier Ortiz Echagüe el laboratorio PLAT, durante la exposición ‘Desbordamiento Val del Omar’.

The sculptor, photographer and designer Javier Viver opened the doors of the San Sebastian Aquarium yesterday to present his exhibition ‘Aurelia Inmortal’, which portrays the amazing life cycle of the Aurelia aurita jellyfish, the only being capable of defeating death. The project is made up of 27 photographs of the «transhuman» species, four sculptures, three drawings and a photo-book, produced by Viver, in which he tells the fictitious story of the immortal society, set in 2046″.

El escultor, fotógrafo y diseñador Javier Viver abrió ayer las puertas del Aquarium de San Sebastián para presentar su exposición ‘Aurelia Inmortal’, donde se retrata el sorprendente ciclo vital de la medusa Aurelia aurita, el único ser capaz de vencer a la muerte. El proyecto se compone de 27 fotografías de la especie «transhumana», cuatro esculturas, tres dibujos y un fotolibro, elaborado por Viver, en el que relata la historia ficticia de la sociedad inmortal, ambientada en 2046.»

The ENAIRE Foundation’s awards are on display at the Cervantes until August 26, presenting at the headquarters of the Instituto Cervantes Evolucionarios, an exhibition consisting of 31 photographs of the winning artists of the three awards that the Foundation has granted in 2018.

Javier Viver’s ‘RÉVÉLATIONS’, the recent launch of the Mexican publishing house RM, has just received the prize for the Best Art Book published in 2015 by the Spanish Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport.
The book is a particular compilation, edition and reading of the photographic archive of the Parisian hospital Salpêtrière. The work has sought new associations and interpretation plans of an iconographic archive that goes beyond the simple exhibition of clinical cases.

«Cum grano salis» is the title of a season of immersive music that is part of the exhibition project » Museum of Passions» by visual artist Javier Viver. Although this exhibition has its main venue in the Lázaro Galdiano Museum in Madrid (where it can be visited from the 5th of February to the 4th of May), it is in the second venue of the project, the Architects’ Chapel, where this cycle of concerts will be held (which will take place between the 13th of February and the 4th of May). Under the dome designed by the architect Ventura Rodríguez, whose remains rest in the crypt of this chapel in the historic Church of San Sebastián – located at number 39, Calle de Atocha – the musicians Fernando Monedero – together with the Taizé choir – will perform («Nacimiento», 13 February), Menhir («La meditación del agua», March 7th), Luis Hernáiz («Levitación», March 21st), Lucas Bolaño («Latido», April 4th), Alberto Bernal («Disolución», April 18th), and again Fernando Monedero (May 2nd), this time without the physical presence of the choir, but with their voices previously recorded. The worship space, without abandoning its dimension as a space for reflection, thus also becomes an exhibition space and a space for the search for the unspeakable.
COMPLETE PROGRAM«Cum grano salis» es el título de un ciclo de música inmersiva que se enmarca dentro del proyecto expositivo «Museo de Pasiones» del artista visual Javier Viver. Si bien esta muestra tiene su sede principal en el Museo Lázaro Galdiano de Madrid (donde se puede visitar desde el 5 de febrero al 4 de mayo), es en la segunda sede del proyecto, la Capilla de los Arquitectos, donde se celebrará este ciclo de conciertos (que se desarrolla entre el 13 de febrero y el 4 de mayo). Bajo la cúpula diseñada por el arquitecto Ventura Rodríguez, cuyos restos reposan en la cripta de esta capilla de la histórica Iglesia de San Sebastián -ubicada en la Calle de Atocha, número 39-, intervendrán los músicos Fernando Monedero -junto al coro de Taizé- («Nacimiento», 13 de febrero), Menhir («La meditación del agua», 7 de marzo), Luis Hernáiz («Levitación», 21 de marzo), Lucas Bolaño («Latido», 4 de abril), Alberto Bernal («Disolución», 18 de abril), y de nuevo Fernando Monedero (el 2 de mayo), esta vez sin la presencia física del coro, pero sí con sus voces previamente grabadas. El espacio de culto, sin abandonar su dimensión de espacio de reflexión, pasa a convertirse así, también, en espacio expositivo y de búsqueda de lo indecible.

The artist from Madrid, Javier Viver, proposes a reinterpretation of the Museo Lázaro Galdiano through the greatest human passions that can be seen from 5 February to 3 May at the museum. A gallery developed by relating photographs of the Parisian psychiatric hospital of the Salpêtrière with the works of the Lazarus Collection.
The main piece in this exhibition is Lot’s Wife, a six-metre high sculpture of stone salt inspired by the biblical character of Edit, which has been turned into a salt statue by looking back.

The artist Javier Viver has taken his work «Revelations» to the Munoa Palace in Barakaldo: a photo book in which he reinterprets the photo archive of the La Salpetriere psychiatric hospital in Paris, photos taken at the end of the 19th century. Viver has installed the photographs on the walls of the palace and around the garden that surrounds this enigmatic enclave… The exhibition is part of the «Baffest» festival organized by the Barakaldo City Council.
Begoña Zubieta has been there and this is the report broadcast on ETB’s Teleberri.El artista Javier Viver ha llevado hasta el palacio Munoa de Barakaldo su trabajo «Revelations»: un fotolibro en donde reintrepreta el archivo de fotos del hospital psiquiátrico La Salpetriere de París, fotos tomadas a finales del siglo XIX. Viver ha instalado las fotografias en las paredes del palacio y en el entorno del jardín que rodea este enigmático enclave… La exposición se enmarca dentro del festival «Baffest» organizado por el Ayuntamiento de Barakaldo.

The «Iconographie de La Salpêtrière» is one of the first photographic archives in the field of clinical psychiatry.
Directed by Jean-Martin Charcot and sponsored by the French state, it involved an effort to catalogue the unclassifiable by means of new photographic-documentary techniques. The marginal, that which did not fit into the rational logic of the modern project, was dissected in La Salpêtrière. It was measured, documented and classified in a systematic way. But in this operation, the use of photography led to the incorporation of the spectacle and with it a whole web of complicities between the patients and their photographers. La Salpêtrière’s show became a theatre of variety in the Tuesday sessions, before a crowded representation of the cultural and scientific elites, by means of the induction by hypnosis of contortions, epileptic seizures and hysteria attacks, the recording and exhibition of cabinets of biological curiosities and rarities, phenomena and monsters.FOTO COLECTANIA

La «Iconographie de La Salpêtrière» es uno de los primeros archivos fotográficos en el campo de la psiquiatría clínica.
Dirigido por Jean-Martin Charcot y patrocinado por el estado francés, supuso un esfuerzo de catalogación de lo inclasificable mediante las nuevas técnicas fotográfico-documentales. Lo marginal, aquello que no entraba en la lógica racional del proyecto moderno, sometió a disección en La Salpêtrière. Se midió, se documentó y clasificó de forma sistemática. Pero en esta operación, el uso de la fotografía propició la incorporación del espectáculo y con él toda una trama de complicidades entre los pacientes y sus fotógrafos. El espectáculo de La Salpêtrière se hizo teatro de variedades en las sesiones de los martes, ante una concurrida representación de las élites culturales y científicas, mediante la inducción por hipnosis de contorsiones, crisis epilépticas y ataques de histeria, el registro y exposición de gabinetes de curiosidades y rarezas biológicas, fenómenos y monstruos.
